The Wild Huntsman

The Wildgrave winds his bugle-horn,
To horse, to horse! halloo, halloo!
His fiery courser snuffs the morn,
And thronging serfs their lord pursue.
...
Again he winds his bugle-horn,
"Hark forward, forward, holla, ho!"
And trough the herd, in ruthless scorn,
He cheers his furious hounds to go.

In heaps the throttled victims fall;
Down skins their mangled herdsman near;
The murderous cries the stag appal, -
Again he starts, new-nerved by fear.
...
"Holy or not, or right or wrong,
Thy altar, and its rites, I spurn;
Not sainted martyrs' sacred song,
Not God himself, shall make me turn."

He spurs his horse, he winds his horn,
"Hark forward, forward, holla, ho!"
But off, on whirlwinds pinions borne,
The stag, the hut, the hermit go.

And horse and man, and horn and hound
And clamour of the chase, was gone;
For hoofs and howls, and bugle-sounds,
A deadly silence reign'd alone.
...
"Be chased for ever through the wood;
For ever roam the affrighted wild;
And let thy fate instruct the proud,
God's meanest creature is his child".
...
The wakeful priest oft drops a tear
For human pride, for human woe,
When at his midnight mass, he hears
The infernal cry of "Holla ho!"

Sein Hengst erhob sich wiehernd vorn;
Laut rasselnd stürzt ihm nach der Tross;
...
"Halloh, Gesellen, d'rauf und d'ran;
Jo! Doho! Hussasasa!" -
Und jeder Hund fiel wütend an,
Was er zunächst vor sich ersah.
Bluttriefend sank der Hirt zur Erde,
Bluttriefend Stück für Stück die Herde.
...
"Verderben hin, Verderben her!
"Das," ruft er, "macht mir wenig Graus,
Und wenn's him dritten Himmel wär',
So acht' ich's keine Fledermaus.
Mag's Gott und dich, du Narr verdriessen,
So will ich meineLust doch büssen!"

Er schwingt die Peitsche, stosst in's Horn;
"Halloh, Gesellen, d'rauf und d'ran!"
Hui, Schwinden Mann und Hütte vorn,
Und hinten schwinden Ross und Mann;
Und Knall und Schall und Jagdebrülle
Verschlingt auf einmal Totenstille.
...
"Fleuch, Unhold, fleuch, und werde jetzt,
Von nun an bis in Ewigheit,
Von Höll' und Teufel selbst gehetzt!
Zum Schreck der Fürsten jeder Zeit,
Die, um verruchter Lust zu frohnen,
Nicht Schöpfer noch Geschöpf verschonen!" -
...
Das ist des wilden Heeres Jagd,
Die bis zum jüngsten Tage währt,
Und oft dem Wüstling noch bei Nacht
Zu Schreck und Grauss vorüber fährt.
Das könnte, müsst' er sonst nicht schweigen,
Wohl manches Jägers Mund bezeugen.
